Ok, deactivating automatic brightside start in the session manager and a
log out/log in cycle solved the problem, so really brightside seems to
be the culprit here.

7.10 all desktops are on one row, no matter what I configure in the
workspace switcher preferences. I don't use any desktop effects (which

Same here with edgy, but in addition gtkpod-aac segfaults when started
without the iPod.

I just swapped out gtkpod-aac for the non-aac gtkpod package, which
shows exactly the same behaviour: no iPod -> segfault, with iPod -> the
same backtrace as with gtkpod-aac.
