No, you are not correct.
Open directory uses a bunch of files and the correct way to open a Disc
is to "Open a disc...", even if it is on disk.
However, VLC 1.0 will work in both case detecting that a Open Folder is
VIDEO_TS.

The version of FFmpeg in Intrepid is enough to fix the bugs I was thinking of,
IIRC.
Moreover, those libavcodec bugs are not listed above.
