This is indeed still a problem on the hardware I just checked it with on
ubuntu 8.10
chipset is a SIS 86C326 5598/6326 (rev 0b) according to lspci
numeric id's gives 0300: 1039:6326
I'm not familiar with lspci, but I hope that this info helps you.
