The reason I have not responded yet was because I haven't been able to install the proposed kernel. This may be a dumb question. I tried another test. I went back to your v2 build (3.2.0-25-generic #40~lp1013183v2). Again, sound was only working at the login screen, and from the normal TTYs, but not in any Gnome app. So I logged into TTY1 (CTRL-ALT-F1) and started playing an MP3.
