Also received this issue going from 14.04 to 16.04. This is very
annoying that postgis extension blocks a full system upgrade. Not to
mention that this bug is 4 years old and still not fixed!

Karmic was the same,
I fixed it by modifying the /etc/usplash.conf instead of being
1980x1200 I changed it to 1980x1080 and it works

Since I've upgradeed to Karmic from Jaunty I've noticed that my
flashplayer is unresponsive(i.e. Video&Sound work in youtube, but cannot
press play/pause/modify sound) I've tried uninstalling(purging)
restarting the system then reinsta
the only time I've seen it crash was when I update through console and
it just restarts, so it would be really hard to attempt to start the
screen-saver while updating hoping it will crash
