install).
it's really annoying reading garbled words; moreover, i do not understand why

i think this bug is caused by an incompatibility between openoffice (2.3,
tested on it only) and a particular gtkrc file (maybe bad formed), since i've
noticed that oo writer starts without any problem if i change the gtk theme -
the X_CreatePixmap note gave me the idea.

running ooffice -writer from Terminal outputs the following:
