Hello,
the proposed package works for me. I have tested it as follows after
installing:
1. Logged out from and then logged in to the GNOME desktop.
2. Locked the screen and then unlocked it.
3. Inserted a pen drive, which got mounted (and the sound effect could be heard
too).
4. No error message

[vmware] Removable drives are not auto-mounted a
Please note, that while I created the apport report in a VM (actually
VirtualBox, no VMWare), the problem originally occurred on a native
installation. So I am not sure the vmware tag is relevant.

As of 11.10, 55NetworkManager calls the already non-existing "sleep" and
"wake" methods on org.freedesktop.NetworkManager. It should call instead
the "Sleep" (not capital 'S') method with a boolean argument:
dbus_send ... ... org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.Sleep boolean:true
Unity need not be enabled. I am using the GNOME Classical desktop, yet
the bug occurs.

I have the same problem, and the reason (in my case) is not the usefree
option, since I don't have. My installation was a Feisty, upgraded to
Gutsy and now Hardy. The automount stopped working after upgrading to
Hardy.
However, I noticed, that if I disable networking via the nm-applet,
automountin
I had the same problem since upgrading to Gutsy. The problem seems to be
that the dhcdbd (some DHCP daemon) is started after NIS and autofs, so
the interface has no chance to come up before init attempts to start
NIS. One solution seems to be to start dhcdbd earlier, i.e. rename
S24dhcdbd to S13dhc
