I suppose, I have similar problem.
When gdm is starting the laptop freezes, the Caps Lock led start blinking and I
can only power off the machine.
This occurs on random bases.
I'm using kernel 2.6.27-7.12 with nvidia proprietary driver 177.

Now my laptop boot every time, except the random lockup while X is loading.
But the problem with booting is fixed. Good work :)
