UPDATE: I removed the package files from /var/cache/apt/archives and did
download anew, then everything worked fine.

Let me add one comment on how I solved that.
After trying to de-install and re-install virtual box a couple of times
via synaptic which was not successfull at all I finally had a look at
Sun's webpages. The Sun download center provides the most current
version of virtual box, version 1.6.

I did a standard upgrade from 7.10 to 8.04 as recommended from the system's
installer. This went fine.

I was upgrading form 7.10 to 8.04 which didn't end successfully. Afterwards,
from the console, I ran
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
and rebootet.
With the first login to the new 8.04 system the error message was reported
