I think that Kenyon Ralph's patch fixes the issue.

Architecture: amd64

InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 9.10 "Karmic Koala" - Release amd64 (20091027)
NonfreeKernelModules: nvidia
Package: w3m 0.5.2-2ubuntu1

My previous does include that information. But I will explicitely tell
you:
~% dpkg -l |grep w3m
ii w3m 0.5.2-2ubuntu1 WWW browsable pager with excellent tables/fr
~% cat /etc/issue
Ubuntu 9.10 \n \l
And I can reproduce this on all my three karmic installs. They are 64
and 32 bit architectures.
Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: w3m
w3m is not compiled with browser support:
~% w3m google.com
w3m: Can't load google.com.
~% dpkg -l |grep w3m

marijkee, this reminds me of something:
~% cat /etc/udev/rules.d/zz_ttyUSB.rules
SUBSYSTEMS=="usb-serial", DRIVERS=="pl2303", SYMLINK+="Serial"
I had to add this code to make sure my usb serial device always gets the same
name.
