I just tried it again and after several attempts, it eventually worked.
I think the issue is with mirrors at SourceForge and it is an
intermittent problem.

Installation of jackd2 ran into a problem because it prompts, but, it
never showed the prompt when running from the GUI installer. When I
installed it with "sudo apt-get install jackd2", then the prompt that
came up showed and "Yes" was able to be selected.

OK, on Lucid, I just enabled the "proposed updates" in "Synaptic". I
then selected to "completely remove" fglrx. Applied updates, which
removed it. I then selected to install it. It worked after installation
was complete and a re-boot.

I tried Zero's solution of rolling back to the 173 version of the NVidia
Driver using the "Hardware Drivers" configurator. This fixed my problem.
The symptoms I was having as follows:

provider. I currently use manually created/edited chat scripts and pppd
