instead of looking at vanilla kernels/kernels from other distros, why
not try to make it work with ubuntu's kernel, so that we can maybe get a
patch applied for a future update.

Sorry to butt in,
I followed the instructions here
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Kernel/Compile. Dany used a vanilla
kernel, so he wouldn't have been able to apt-get it. You can get the
vanilla kernel at http://www.kernel.org. Also, there is a good thread
on the forums http://ubuntuforums.
Rob, in debian/rules the line under abi version( i'm running off of
memory so bear with me) has a dash before referencing that version. I
changed that to a . and had a little more help, but it still wouldn't
finish for me.

ok, i can confirm, that making the changes that you specified above does
allow me to get sound!
The only problem that I have is that I have been unable to compile
linux-restricted-modules.
If someone can get this done we'll be golden.
Also, I would try to attach the patch to the kernel, but
i would think that the driver would work regardless. It's all linux.

does that solve it with the gutsy kernel, or the debian kernel?

i had wiped and put mandriva on, but just like the features of ubuntu
better, so i wiped and brought ubuntu back. At least in the mean time I
can just boot the feisty kernel.

i got the ubuntu patched version to compile and boot, took about an hour
and a half, but it had no wireless support (i'm sure i could have gotten
that to work if i googled around), but still no sound.
Do you know any way to check the differences between the 2.6.22 vanilla
vs the ubuntu kernel?
