When you run npm, it crashes every time. I am using Precise (12.04) Beta 2, with updates as of 13 April 2012. I Googled and Debian had the same bug, see http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=664660 . Debian fixed this by upgrading to a newer NPM. I filed the crash bug as bug 980908.
