I've tried multiple times to do the upgrade, but I got an error message
about unofficial packages. I've removed many of those I believe are
unofficial, but I cannot identify any more. I don't know what else I
have to do.

I've found that the problem with visual effects is due to a Compiz blacklisted
hardware (intel 965 and ATI graphics)
You can enable visual effects (at your own risk) by following the steps listed
on Compiz Wiki:
