The DVD-RW drive is plugged into SATA port 5, and detected as ata3.00 / scsi

Indeed it's not just Toshiba and Intel. I've got Intrepid 8.10, kernel
2.6.27-11-generic running on a ASUS P5B Deluxe and I get an 8 second
