I have the same problem, but it seems to be a bug with recognizing
seagate hard drives, if I remove it the system boots without problems.

Binary package hint: kde-systemsettings
Display settings reports that I'm using the nv driver when, in fact, I'm
using nvidia. The option to specify wich driver I'using is grayed out.
I'm using Feisty Herd 4.

I installed kernel version 2.6.20-12-lowlatency and the bug is still
alive. I have to wait the next version or the patch doesn't apply to low
latency?

No, you got to purge the package using this command:
sudo apt-get --purge remove console-setup
this will remove all the configuration files of console-setup. Then install
with:
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-minimal

Mine also fails like that:

I had the same problem in breezy and the first release of dapper. Disabling
renderaccel solved the problem. Now I'm using edgy with the acceleration
activated and I'm not seeing any crash, for now.

The problem appears only when the RENDERACCEL option is activated. I guess
this bug will remain open until nvidia fixes it.
