the repair screen I was able to update, now it boots and I can Log but I
only get my desktop icons, no menu oof any kind.

frontend crashed
actually the upgrade did not complete (uname reported oneiric kernel),
the desktop had so many errors is was not functional at all. i had to
install gnome-desktop then unity. I have upgraded again and finally it
is 3.2... kernel

I just updated 19/03/2010 and gt the same problem, an empty desktop and only
the mouse working, the only key combination that seems to work is Ctrl-Alt-Del.
