I still encountered a failure beginning with Ubuntu GNOME Trusty i386
w/Vivid HWE. There was a kernel upgrade prior to performing the HWE
upgrade (most recent prior updates performed on 2016-08-07 followed by
installing update-manager from proposed):

I tested an Ubuntu server w/Utopic HWE install tonight and all seemed to
go well:

linux-headers-generic-lts-utopic linux-image-extra-3.16.0-30-generic
linux-generic-lts-utopic linux-image-3.16.
One thing that jumped out at me on an Lubuntu test tonight was the "will become
available on 2016-07-21" date:

I'm going to test Ubuntu GNOME w/Vivid stack tomorrow but tonight I ran
a Lubuntu w/Utopic HWE upgrade and I think all looks fine:
sudo /usr/lib/update-notifier/update-motd-hwe-eol shows:

So I'd want to check for the presence of xserver-xorg-video-r128-lts-
xenial and xserver-xorg-video-mach64-lts-xenial after the HWE upgrade?

I think the devs are trying to figure that out in bug #1610434. For some

I need to wipe these failed HWE upgrades to make space for more testing
so I'm attaching apt logs from one in case they may be helpful to the

Re bug #1610434 - the HWE upgrade process fails to install libwayland-
egl1-mesa-lts-xenial on Ubuntu GNOME so it boots to a blank black
screen.

I'm pretty sure I figured this out. The HWE upgrade process fails to
install libwayland-egl1-mesa-lts-xenial. If I do so from TTY (or
recovery mode) and reboot all seems well!
