But it works in metacity, are you sure it is something that Pidgin is missing?
I thought this bug was due to compiz not remembering the last location and size
of the windows, like metacity does.
Couldn't it be a job for the plugin "Place windows"?

It doesn't need to do it by default, but it would help to have an option
in the "Place Windows" plugin that allowed to choose this behavior.

using my normal timezone configuration (America/Sao_Paulo):
$ date -d '2008-10-19'
date: invalid date `2008-10-19'
If I set the environment variable TC it works:
$ TZ=UTC0 date -d '2008-10-19'

Same problem using final Edgy release. Could boot and install the system
using pci=off, but the kernel of the system has the same problem. Don't
know if is the same kernel of the liveCD...
