I too ran up against this as I updated some custom bootable systems
based on 17.04 and many of my test network dongles would not work. Took
lots of time finding this solution, ie adding
[device]
wifi.scan-rand-mac-address=no
to the /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf file.

I too had this but found out it's a setting in Firefox called Caret Browsing.
You can toggle it using the F7 button.
Some update must have set this on because it showed up after an update but I
don't recall which one.
Caret Browser off is what you want to try. F7 key

this is tough and problematic and we were very lucky to have 8.04(LTS)
3D accelerated fglrx working. But it means we can't get updated software
via Ubuntu and can only run what's already in the repo. It means that if
you require 3D acceleration, you/we are stuck on 8.04 forever. The way
it seems is
I just had nautilus crash with SIGSEGV after opening the preferences

relates to permissions on a USB device. Mine was on a PCMCIA based

I just tried my QX3 microscope with both Gutsy and the latest Hardy beta

I plugged in the USB device, made sure the cpia module is loaded,

because this is the 2nd time Firefox crashed right after I double-
