I have a different card than the original reporter, but it is also the
intel driver and I also get X restarts upon hibernation, but not upon VT
switches.
With some experimenting, I found that the X server start does not occur,
if the screen lock upon hibernation is disabled.

It occurs in the standard Jaunty distribution. I can add, that it also
occurs after one installs the "optimal" configuration of the HOWTO:
