I just did a a release update to 10.10 using the normal Update Manager.
When going to the System menu and selecting About Ubuntu I get the
normal "Ubuntu - Linux for Human Beings!" help page, but to my surprise

I believe I found a solution to this problem:
You must fully power OFF your computer to clear this error state.
Reboot/restart and sleep are NOT sufficient.
I was able to get my Ethernet port working normally again by shutting
down, unplugging AC adapter, and removing battery for a minute. When I
I have the same issue on a Lenovo T61p. I am running a fully updated
10.04 which has kernel 2.6.32-25-generic. I also tried rebooting with
the older 2.6.32-23-generic kernel as Karl suggested, but that did not
solve the issue for me.

CPU usage by events/1 spiking rhythmically every ~4 secon
I also had a similar issue where I first noticed suspend not working
after upgrading to Lucid Lynx. I have a Lenovo/IBM Thinkpad T61p. And
thanks to Michael I was also able to track the issue to having a SD card
mounted when trying to suspend. Screen goes blank like and "moon" LED
starts flashing (
