By the way, as I side effect I was not able to mount other disk
partitions or removable media. Disabling auto login for my user solved
both problems at once.

I've been experiencing this issue since I changed my user password.
Solved:
Followed post #24 indications and now I can properly restart and shutdown.

I have this same problem in Lucid and I don't find this bug to be
spurious, it always happens if you try to change only the last
characters of your password.
