I have now managed to get tkcvs working on my system by installing the
default tk package, (sudo apt-get install tk).
Note - I already had tk8.4 installed, but tkcvs would not run without
the default tk package.

As the above, (misspelled), comment suggests, I've just installed 8.10,
(kernel 2.6.27-7), and the problem remains. I am using the M2.41 bios
mentioned above, so this doesn't appear to fix the problem.
My workaround for the problem is as follows:
1. Install using the text based alternate install
The bug still exists in 8.10 kernel 2.6.27, so changeing status to New,
as requested by Launchpad Janitor on 2008-08-11
