I'm on Quantal and after a fresh install I don't have the p7zip package. By a research I understand that is not recommended more. However there is a strict dependence for file-roller: p7zip-full, but is superseded by the zip package so for a standard installation the 7z compression is not supported

Same problem, but seeing this report: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/file-roller/+bug/276496 I added the missing p7zip package and now for .7z compression the splitting works. Right now I don't know if this feature is supported only by p7zip backend and for .7z compression. Please ex
