I can confirm this bug on a fresh install of Hardy on another Thinkpad X31. I have also noticed that when gnome-power-manager turns off the display when running on battery the backlight remains on. Not sure if this is related. -- Suspend fails to power off display on Thinkpad X31 https://bugs.
