I managed to work around this like this:
* Forcing Windows 10 to use \EFI\ubuntu\shimx64.efi as in "bcdedit /set
{bootmgr} path \EFI\ubuntu\shimx64.efi"
* Changing BIOS setup to use Secure Boot (Didn't have it, didn't want it. never
had it).
Not both ubuntu and win

yesterday I had recently upgraded 12.10 to 13.04 32 bit and I had it
working. Although I decided to move to a fresh 64bit install of 13.04.
After the fresh install of 13.04 64 bit and I am suffering the same
problem and network manager indicator ends up crashing when it tries to
connect.

For those of you with TOTAL freeze and using ath9k driver for a wireless
card I have been able to fix the problem.
So, my case seemed to be really the wireless driver + the model in used,
concretly an AR9287 as reported by lspci.
The same exact looking card in another box reporting as AR9287 inst
Excuse my previous report, my wireless card is a AR9287. I see many
reports of freezes with this model, even in FREEBSD, googling to find a
fix desperately.
The other machine where I was reporting from that never freezes has a
AR9227, and it is a 32 bit system.

I have a:

I have tried Linux mint 12, Debian stable and I have had freezes in all
Indeed, I have just tried the 295.49 driver from nvidia, removing
everything nvidia from ubuntu previously and I still got the freeze.
I also installed latest oneiric kernel with the same result to see if I
get lucky as @yorgasor and still got the total freeze.

I must say I have installed 12.04 succesfully in 3 other machines with
no freezes, so maybe this is happening on fairly new type of hardware?
My results in different boxes:
* Lenovo T400 laptop, Intel Integrated, 32bit install, successful

I tried compiling the kernel from kernel.org, version 3.3.5, it took a
while but it also freezed completely (machine completely unresponsive,
no mouse or ping or ctrl+alt+f1 out of it) same as with ubuntu stock
kernel.

Machine boots up, wireless use , freeze in minutes.
