I had the same problem.
Ubuntu 16.04, Xerox Phaser 3140.
"lpadmin -p -o usb-no-reattach-default=true" solved the problem.

The same with my system that is upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04
When logged two users and one of them (no matter who was first logged) log out
I get blank screen witout ability to switch any where.
Ctrl+Alt+F1...F10 do not work.
The only way is to make hard reboot.
