1. it turns out that the steps in my previous message won't actually
allow you to complete installation of Ubuntu Server 10.04, due to an
issue that arises as a result of manually mounting the CD image as a
loopback device. However, that too can be worked around. I've created

I have the same problem and same hardware. After a lot of struggling, I
found a workaround that allowed me to install Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on my

You will need an Ubuntu Server 10.04 CD and a USB stick formatted as

Unfortunately, the workaround mentioned above seems not actually to have
helped. When I first tried it, I was able to use desktop effects for
about an hour with no problems. I then rebooted, however, and X froze
again within a minute of the desktop appearing. I haven't been able to

As a workaround, I've discovered that switching to EXA acceleration
seems to work. To do that, open the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf and make
sure you have a section that looks like:

Identifier "Configured Video Device"
Option "AccelMethod" "exa"

Just an update that as of today, on a fully upgraded Karmic system, I
now experience the following new behavior:
1. with compiz enabled, X freezes within three seconds of Gnome loading.
It used to take up to a minute
2. on the other hand, I can now use alt-printscreen-r-e to restart X.

Antioch: thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately I tested it again an
hour ago on a fully upgraded Karmic system (installed to hard disk) and
the behavior has not changed. It still freezes about a minute after
enabling desktop effects, and neither dmesg nor Xorg.0.log shows
anything afterwards t

but it's possible that I was using the package from the tovid site,
which may not be fixed to address the removal of makemenu from the
