CORRECTION OF THE ABOVE
*blush* My fault. in feisty I don't have any errors anymore, I just thought
it was an error, but everything works fine (uhm, I used the wrong partition...)
I guess I thought it was an error because actually I _did_ have that
external disk error yesterday, but it's real

Yes, I can confirm the fix. I've reproduced the error (by activating
"enable desktop effects"), then upgraded, then retried and it didn't
crash but simply say that it can't enable the desktop effects.

In the screenshot I made a circle around the gnome-panel I'm talking
about.
As you can see, its size is a lot smaller than it should be, it doesn't
show everything it contains. Additionally, no matter what I set the
