The nvidia package failed to install on a routine update from the GUI. I
then dropped to a terminal window to try again manually. It looks like
the compile is failing.
Copy of /var/lib/dkms/nvidia/390.132/build/make.log is attached.

I have tried isotope's fix of adding to /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/ a
file named 20-intel.conf with the following:

The fix works for me: X now starts on boot with my two external monitors
plugged in.

panel. When I click the Dropbox system tray icon menu, it only stays
visible for as long as my cursor is over the panel. When I move the
cursor and the panel autohides, so does the menu.

I've installed some mainline kernels to check and again the problem is
resolved and I can connect without problem.
The two kernels I've checked are:
3.9.0-030900-generic
3.10.0-999-generic
I've not tried wicd as I couldn't get it to install on my laptop.

I can concur with rgrig that under Kubuntu 13.04 booting with a 3.5
kernel rather than a 3.8 kernel solved the issue for me.
Also, as with rgrig, the other workarounds didn't work for the 3.8
kernel.
