The backslash is gone in karmic, but the behavior is not fixed. With the
karmic (and upstream debian) bash-completion package, environment
variables still do not expand.
$ cd $HOME
$HOME
As others have noted, simply removing $filenames breaks the expansion.

recognize my symlinked home directory
