I should add that the PC is an HP e-Vectra with 256 Mb RAM (max allowed)
running at 650MHz. There are no PCI slots so everything is onboard.

unable to close or open applications
unable to shut down pc with ctrl-alt-delete
restarted pc, then disabled sound - no further problem, but no sound either
OS = edgy
hibernate and sleep both disabled
crash report attached
artsd fas later caused crash in knotify. Have disabled artsd for now.

NIC is identified correctly but will not function.
Slackware installation works ok, but not Ubuntu.
Tried with Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Edubuntu.
