I did that and it works, thanks. I guess the bug is that the passwd file
got locked at some point during the dist upgrade and remained locked.
Some process in the upgrade must have a condition where it leaves a
stale lock, which causes problems with the rest of the upgrade process.

I had a look into the log files and it seems several packages failed
installing/updating because they tried to create a new user, and the
/etc/passwd was locked (by a stale /etc/passwd.lock file, which I had to
remove manually.) So the question is, which update left behind a
/etc/passwd.lock file b
Files from /var/log/dist-upgrade as requested.
I created a .tar.bz2 of the files, as there are 25 files in total.
