much was running beyond the OS. "top" shows the culprit to be "Yelp"
which I opened earlier today. As I found documented elsewhere, to

Just upgraded from 8.04 to 8.10, and seeing the same problem with
missing information on the Help/About screen. Locale is en_US.UTF-8.
cat /etc/lsb-release returns:
DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu
DISTRIB_RELEASE=8.10
DISTRIB_CODENAME=intrepid
DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu 8.10"
