When you get to the login screen switch over to the one of the command
line tty.
ALT+F2 should give you one of them. Log into the command line with your user
name and type the following command ->
metacity --replace &
This should disable the compiz program.
To re-enable type:
compiz --replace
Sorry forgot to leave one command. When you are done with the tty you can type
ALT+ F7 to put it back in gui mode.
If you get no response from this command you can try the ALT+CTRL+F2.

Just some questions to understand the bug earlier. I know when I started
my comp today I had a kernel update. Did you update the kernel with
update also.
If so when you boot up into grub can you check to see if the old kernel
entry still exists and try to start up that way.
