Definitely detecting correctly with the Gentoo patch.System ->
Preferences -> Mouse has the Trackpad tab now. Mouse clicks by tapping
trackpad works. Scrolling does not.

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics
USB mouse attached as well. Issue occurs whether USB mouse is attached
or not. Trackpad tab not available in Mouse Preferences.
