I confirm this bug for Intrepid.
Gnome doesn't play any Alert Sound when everything is checked in
system->preferences->sound.
I have my internal pc speaker unplugged (because I hate it) but still have the
mod active:

This is already implemented but it's hardcoded to not use this format.
Here's the fix to change the format. This changes the Mode to Medium
instead of Long. This doesn't affect anything else.
