I've just downloaded Ubuntu 8.10 and run from the live CD. So far as I
can tell, the problem is now fixed. All the diacritics I tried (those I
want to use, plus a few) appeared properly.
Thanks for the reminder to check, and especially to whoever fixed it.

I've just downloaded Kubuntu 6.06 and tried it, and it works as
expected. So there is a difference between the Gnome and KDE
implementations here.

I know that OOo 2.0.3 from the OOo website does work on other Linuxes,
but I notice that Ubuntu rebuild OOo for their distro (e.g. the Fonts
wizard is missing), so unless Ubuntu do not do anything to remove the
feature it will be there.
