A workaround that works for me is to run "sudo iwlist scan". After the
scan completes, the list of networks is updated in the network applet.
But of course I agree that having to do this is irritating.

A workaround which works in my case is to install "bluez-compat" and use
hidd to connect to the device once. This apparently teaches the device
which computer it should be talking to. Now it just connects
automatically when I turn it on.

I am experiencing the same bug in Kubuntu 10.10 (regression from 10.04).
