I'm running a fresh install of Ubuntu 14.10. I set up my VPN using the
same settings that worked in 14.04. When I try to connect using the
nm-applet gui I get no visual indication that anything is happening. I
get the following in the syslog:

Gnome Shell in Ubuntu 11.10 32 bit on a Dell Latitude D820 with an

I can confirm this. It happens on both my netbook with Intel graphics
and my laptop with Nvidia graphics. When compiz is enabled and Firefox
is set to fullscreen, the fullscreen window disappears revealing the
desktop background for a brief second when zooming or sometimes when
switching between
