After further investigation, I believe this is related to
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xdg-desktop-portal-
gnome/+bug/2085698 and https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/xdg-desktop-
portal-gnome/-/issues/118. The workaround to restart xdg-desktop-portal-
gnome works in my case.

Tested the same upload under Chromium and got the same symptoms, so this
is likely not Firefox-specific. Both Chromium and Firefox are installed
as snap packages.

(https://stackoverflow.com/questions/77233855/why-did-i-get-an-error-

around by installing python3-setuptools.
