I can confirm that this bug is fixed in Karmic, since the problem no
longer occurs for me using xserver-xorg-video-intel
2:2.7.99.1+git20090602.

For me VLC never shows up in the list that is shown when you select
"Open With Other Application" in Nautilus. I've tried right-clicking on
mp3 files, video files etc but the result is the same. What is required
in order for an application to show up there? VLC does list the mime
types it support
