Seconded: 4.4.0-75.96 from the main xenial repository fixes the problem.

Seconding #71: 4.4.0-74.95 from xenial-proposed works on i386 (both
lowlatency and generic).

Xenial's 4.4.0-73.94 works for me too, after a reinstall.
The laptop's an MSI U160, also with a Realtek 802.11n adapter with
driver rtl8192cu.

4.4.0-73 boots and logs in with no freeze in Xenial.
I'm missing other components (video drivers, wifi), but there is no
freeze. I am not sure whether this is because of the rough-and-tumble
nature of the -proposed packages or due to missteps in installation on
my part, but that specific bug does
As an alternative to 4.4.0-62, I've been running 4.4.52 from
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.4.52/
on Xenial i386. This was suggested to me as a test by the dev in the
discussion on Bug #1667920, where I inadvertently duplicated the present
bug.

Checked just now for 4.4.0-71-generic on xenial, still broken. So to
summarize (xenial):
Everything between 4.4.0-63 and 4.4.0-71 (inclusive) exhibits the bug,
except for 4.4.0-69.

Same for me: worked briefly with 4.4.0-69, bug came back with 4.4.0-70
(Xenial).

Same here for xenial: 4.4.0-69 from xenial-proposed fixed it.

Thanks!
That specific bug is gone in your version. I've booted and logged in
successfully and consistently, with and without GUI.

I don't think I'll be able to test that: the folder you link to seems to

I *do* see it with 4.8.17, but on 16.04 still (so not Yakkety). I have
not run Yakkety at all.

The 4.4.41 version you linked to exhibits the same behaviour as 4.4.0-66
(and 4.8.17, which I've also installed manually): lets me log in, but
then freezes immediately.

Another bit of info, in case it helps:
I've also tried booting directly in tty mode via
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet"
Quick update: upgraded to 4.4.0-66 just now, and it behaves a little
differently; both the standard and the upstart versions consistently
freeze *after* login.
I always get enough time to enter the password and clear the initial
login screen, but then it freezes in seconds.

I've enabled -proposed, but when running apt update no linux packages
are listed (I've tried with apt list --upgradable). I am sure the system
sees the -proposed package archive because I get plenty of suggestions
for upgrade, just nothing that looks like a kernel.
So which package would I have to
The upstream versions of 4.4.52 I have tested are also still booting
fine for me (plain and low latency; tested multiple times by now).
The downstream versions are still freezing though, up to and including
4.4.0-65, to which I updated yesterday.

The issue seems to be resolved in 4.4.52-040452-generic (boots fine, no
