You don't have to copy the XML generated by shotwell to gnome-
background-properties. You have to create a different XML (I named it
wallpaper.xml) with this code that points to the XML from shotwell:

I have this exact issue, after an update around the same date.
I can see the images are copied to
/home//.local/share/shotwell/wallpaper/ and the XML is created with
correct paths but that's it.
The wallpaper is not changed nor is the slideshow added to the list of

FWIW, bumping the kernel on the host (and most likely on the L1 VMs too) should
work.
The HWE kernel in Xenial is the same version (4.15) with the kernel used by
Bionic (18.04), so this should fix the problem:

I have been trying to easily reproduce this for days.
We initially observed it in OPNFV Armband, when we tried to upgrade our Ubuntu
Xenial installation kernel to linux-image-generic-hwe-16.04 (4.8).
In our environment, this was easily triggered on compute nodes, when launch
Quick update: upgraded to 4.4.0-66 just now, and it behaves a little
differently; both the standard and the upstart versions consistently
freeze *after* login.
I always get enough time to enter the password and clear the initial
login screen, but then it freezes in seconds.

I've enabled -proposed, but when running apt update no linux packages
are listed (I've tried with apt list --upgradable). I am sure the system
sees the -proposed package archive because I get plenty of suggestions
for upgrade, just nothing that looks like a kernel.
So which package would I have to
The upstream versions of 4.4.52 I have tested are also still booting
fine for me (plain and low latency; tested multiple times by now).
The downstream versions are still freezing though, up to and including
4.4.0-65, to which I updated yesterday.

After a recent update to kernel 4.4.0-63 I have started getting frozen
login screens. The touchpad and keyboard are completely dead (before I

I have experienced the same dreadful situation -- after a routine update
the virtual machine was no longer able to reach the login screen. If it
