the outer ovl_mmap() function in fs/overlayfs/file.c

but on kernels with AUFS enabled it triggers the issue described above?

This patch lightly relies on AUFS.
All that we need is
https://github.com/JPyke3/mbp-manjaro-kernel/blob/master/aufs5-mmap.patch
to bring needed helpers. Can we keep these changes in ubuntu sauce after AUFS
will be dropped?

The previous fix was reverted due to

that's weird and I can't see any logical connection between the previous fix
and problem with docker registry.
