Extended attributes are lost when the file is upx packed.
Example:
getfattr /bin/ping -m . , output:
# file: bin/ping
security.capability
then upx /bin/ping (no errors)
getfattr /bin/ping -m . , output:
(empty)

Importance:
upx does reject to pack a file with suid bit set, so should refuse to pack a
file with some xattrs set.
In particular, file capabilities are lost.
