Andy, thanks for checking back on this.
Consulting my dmesg log, I don't seem to see that "ioread error" anymore
in Ubuntu 9.04, so the issue may be solved.
But I'll keep an eye out for any reappearance in future releases.

Thank you for your suggestion. However, I'm trying to use the latest
stable Smplayer (0.6.4) and it has been asking me for the latest mplayer
to run at full capacity.
I reported a bug because a simple package install (liblame0) was giving
me an error; if I can get liblame0 to install correctly, us
