The side buttons (BTN_EXTRA/SIDE or buttons 8/9 in Xorg) are mapped to
forward/back (Alt+Right/Left). So it sounds like the wheel is getting
misinterpreted as that, sometimes.

I have also tried setting Thunderbird's settings for Files & Attachments
to "Use /bin/okular". The pdf files are still not opened.
As a workaround, I can save the pdf files and then open them with
okular. But WHY do I have to do this in a roundabout way? It used to
"just work" seamlessly!

I have the same issue on Xubuntu 6700XT system after upgrading from
23.10 to 24.04. Reboot after upgrade worked and then got the issue on
the 2nd boot. Removing "splash" from grub works.

The failing monitor is 1080p old NEC MustySync EA231EMi
The main monitor is 4K, it has no issues
Lowering resolutions to 1600x900 on failing monitor or 1080p on 4k monitor
