Ok, the problem is recurring again, so I've gathered a backtrace with
that dbgsym package installed, hopefully it provides more insight as to
where things are getting blocked up.

time.
Can you confirm this without partitionmanager by running
sudo blockdev --getsize64 /dev/fd0
But from dmesg it looks like blockdev just waits for kernel to reply.
